Her house is near to Techa River. She has no running water besides the tap in her garden. She thinks the water is also polluted, because she is living so close to the river. Muslyumovo has been contaminated with radio-active material from 1947 until 1954 when the Mayak Chemical Nuclear Complex dumped their radio-active waste in the Techa River wich flows through Muslyumovo. Techa river is still highly radio-active, it is forbidden to swim, or drink from the river or grow vegetables at the banks. The village was never evacuated, most of its inhabitants are sick because of the radiation. His black and white photographs capture the ordinariness of day-to-day life while at the same time reminding us that this is far from a 'normal' community. Knoths moving portrayal of a community living in one of the most radioactively contaminated places in the world, will be accompanied by testimonies from the people of Mayak collected by humanitarian journalist Antoinette De Jong, who accompanied Knoth.Related Collections:Mayak Radiation Victims Documentation (Photos & Videos)
