Woman’s Eyes Possibly Affected by Factory Farm in Lescout, France
Near the small village of Lescout there is a big hen factory farm, currently farming 185,000 hens. At the time of a visit by Greenpeace France, locals like municipal councillor Thomas Drieux expressed their concerns on what according to their calculations is an extraordinary high rate of cancer in the area.
This is the angiogram of an eye tumour, seen as a black spot. Eye tumours are an extremely rare form of malignant cancer and N. (who prefers to keep her name anonymous), who has lived in Lescout for almost thirty years, is the only survivor of the two cases of eye cancer recorded in the village. N. was lucky that the tumour did not affect her brain. The malignant disease is healed but N.’s vision remains affected. N. recalls: “My doctors couldn’t identify the cause of my tumour, but they mentioned it could be caused possibly by the factory farm.”

Hen Factory Farm in France
The egg laying hen factory farm of Lescout, Gallès, located a few hundred meters away from the village, is the only industrial facility for animal agriculture of the area and is currently farming 185,000 hens. First built in the 1980s, it steadily grew and was expanded in 2016 to the modern and highly industrial facility it is today. The owner is planning to expand more as a building permit has been requested for a new building. The village of Lescout has only 700 inhabitants. The quantity of hens in the factory farm outnumbers the population of the village by 264 times.
