The Chinese government invested over 100 million yuan to build the power station so that Maduo County (the First County of Yellow River) could be powered by water to produce electricity. It has 2 generators, with the total installed capacity of 2400 KW. Now only one is working. The current water level of the reservoir is 4268 meters, only a bit higher than the lowest operating water level 4260m. (the highest is 4290m). Last year the power station didn't generate any electricity at all and only started operating on April 14th. The station workers were forced to find odd jobs to support their lives. With better rainfall this year, the situation is slightly improved but the prospect looks bleak with diminishing water source and glacier retreat in the source region.Locations:Asia-China-East Asia-Eling Lake (Qinghai)-Madoi-QinghaiDate:12 Jun, 2005Credit:© Greenpeace / John NovisMaximum size:4992px X 3328pxKeywords:Climate (campaign title)-Climate change impacts-Desertification-Helmets-Indoors-KWCI (GPI)-Men-One person-Power stationsShoot:Yellow River Documentation Tour in ChinaFrom 1966 to 2000, glaciers in the Yellow River Source region retreated by 17% in area, causing the loss of 2.39 billion m3 of water from source of the river. Greenpeace is calling for due attention and action to deal with disasters that climate change brings about and reminds all that reducing CO2 emission to stop climate change must be done now.
