The thermoelectric power plant in Tula, Hidalgo, where Greenpeace Mexico is preparing to carry out an action in occasion of Earth Day 2021. Fuel oil is being burned in this plant with a 3.9 percent sulfur content by mass, exceeding the maximum limit established by the Official Mexican Standard NOM-016-CRE-2016, of 2 percent. Durante una acción pacífica realizada en el marco del Día de la Tierra frente a dichas instalaciones, Greenpeace México elevó un globo aerostático con la etiqueta “Exceso de contaminación” como las usadas en los alimentos industrializados, para advertir que en ese lugar, se quema combustóleo con contenido de 3.9 por ciento de azufre en masa, rebasando el límite máximo establecido por la Norma Oficial Mexicana NOM-016-CRE-2016, de 2 por ciento. El combustóleo es una de las fuentes fósiles que más gases de efecto invernadero emiten por kWh, 898gCO2.
