Deforestation and Fire Monitoring in the Amazon in July, 2020 - “Maranhense” Case - Clipreel
“Maranhense” is one of the biggest cattle breeders in the state of Pará, with R$45 million (over €7 million) worth in penalties in his name for environmental damage. Greenpeace Brazil gathered evidence on fraud and deforestation linked to his name and his farm, Tiborna (Pará state), located near Triunfo do Xingu APA (Environmental Protection Area). After having his farm fined and embargoed due to deforestation, in September 2019, “Maranhense” altered the limits of his estate in the Environmental Rural Register (CAR). From the original 58 thousand hectares, Tiborna Farm ended up having only 7 thousand hectares. A significant portion of his states “vanished”, and in that area, a few months later, Greenpeace caught the deforestation of 5,369 hectares on camera.
Every year, Greenpeace Brazil flies over the Amazon to monitor deforestation build up and forest fires. In July, 2020, flights were made over points with Deter (Real Time Deforestation Detection System) and fire warnings, made by Inpe (National Institute for Space Research), in Pará and Mato Grosso states.
