The Harz Mountains are characterized by spruce, beech and mixed forests. Spruces often grow in monocultures in the Harz and due to the drought they often suffer from drought stress. They have no defenses left and the bark beetle has an easy game and attacks the spruces in masses. These die in large numbers. The beech is to recolonize these areas and near-natural forests are to be created.
