The overall goal of the ship tour is to bring a spotlight on the Israeli Government's plans for a massive expansion of offshore gas production and the risks both to the climate and to the Unique Marine environment of the Eastern Mediterranean sea. The Science Unit together with researchers from the Morris Kahn Marine Research Station at the Charney School of Marine Sciences at the University of Haifa, conducted in May 2022 the 2nd leg of the most comprehensive marine mammal population survey to document the presence of cetaceans within the study area – the continental slope area of Israel. Data on the presence of all cetaceans will be recorded, with a specific focus on sperm whales. 

גרינפיס ישראל, בשיתוף יחידת המחקר של גרינפיס הבינלאומי וחוקרי תחנת מוריס קאהן לחקר הים בבית הספר למדעי הים ע”ש צ’רני באוניברסיטת חיפה, ייצאו בחודש מאי לחלקו השני של סקר אוכלוסיית היונקים הימיים המקיף ביותר שנערך עד כה בתחומי המים הכלכליים של ישראל - אזור שכמעט לא נחקר ועומד לקראת פתיחה של כ-15 אלף קמ״ר לקידוחים מסוכנים של גז ונפט חדשים לייצוא. צוות החוקרים יפליג במפרשית המחקר החדשה של גרינפיס: ״העדה״ (SY Witness), יתמקד בים העמוק מעבר לאזור המדף היבשתי של ישראל, וישתמש בהידרופון לזיהוי אקוסטי של יונקים ימיים בדגש על ראשתנים (sperm whales).
