Deployment of Hydrophone from Arctic Sunrise in Norway
Lead Scientist Kirsten Thompson (out of frame) and members of the crew — deckhand Silja Zimmermann and 18-year-old environmental activist Mya-Rose Craig, work to haul in the 350 meters of tubing attached to the hydrophone before the Arctic Sunrise enters the sea ice.
Whales and dolphins make unique sounds whilst feeding and socialising. Greenpeace’s ship Arctic Sunrise is using a towed hydrophone array (underwater microphone) to survey for whales in the Arctic. Scientists will then analyse these recordings to better understand species distributions in the region.
The Greenpeace team is heading north to the Arctic to document and bear witness to the 2020 sea ice minimum.
