Illegal Mining in Munduruku Indigenous Land in Brazil
In an overflight carried out between October 17 and 19, 2021, Greenpeace Brasil caught scenes of destruction caused by illegal mining inside the Munduruku and Sai Cinza Indigenous Lands, in Pará. Since 2016, illegal mining has already destroyed at least 632 miles of rivers within the two territories. This level of destruction is equal to what Vale inflicted on the Rio Doce in the Mariana tragedy - which directly impacted 663 miles of rivers. The monitoring also shows that, in the last five years, there has been an increase of 2.278% in the extension of rivers destroyed in these Indigenous Lands. Monitoring carried out by Greenpeace also found 16 open airstrips - and at least 12 of them are linked to mining activity.
