Wildfire - Methane leaks in Aderklaa OMV refinery
Gas station Aderklaa is operated by OMV and located nearby Vienna. The special camera
shows that some of the escaping gas was burned off but not completely, which can lead to
questionable amounts of methane, particulate matter, carbon monoxide or volatile organic
compounds (VOCs). In addition, a vent is visible in the right-hand area of the Aderklaa
images, from which hydrocarbons - including methane, which is harmful to the climate, but
also VOCs, which can be harmful to health - are emitted.
This can be seen in the close-up shot in Aderklaa. Above all, the panoramic shots show that
the emissions sometimes travel long distances and still remain clearly visible. This means
that, depending on the weather conditions and the exact composition of the emissions, these
emissions can have negative consequences for animal and plant life as well as for people in
the surrounding area. It can be assumed that these emissions both contribute to climate
destruction and worsen the air quality of the immediate surroundings.
