Boulder Placement in the Dogger Bank in the North Sea
A boulder falls into the North Sea from the Greenpeace ship, Esperanza.
Inert granite boulders are being placed into the North Sea as part of a new bottom trawler exclusion zone in the Dogger Bank Marine Protected Area.
The initiative will help prevent destructive bottom trawling which destroys the Dogger Bank’s protected seabed.

Greenpeace UK activists place inert granite boulders at precise locations inside the Dogger Bank marine protected area in the North Sea to ensure that bottom trawlers can no longer operate in the new bottom trawler exclusion zone.
The Dogger Bank’s seabed is one of the North Sea’s most important habitats. It is home to sandeels, crabs, flatfish and more. These species are a vital food source for porpoises and seabirds like puffins.
