Hot Air Balloon over Forest in India
Greenpeace launches two hot air balloons, including the Greenpeace balloon, over forests in Mahaan in Singrauli, located in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Indian film actor Abhay Deol boarded one of the balloons and spoke to media persons to highlight the threat to the dense forests in Mahaan from coal mining. The balloons were launched to draw people’s attention to the threatened forests and to seek their support in saving these forests. Coal India Limited, the Ministry of Coal and even the Prime Minister has been pushing for the Mahaan forest block to be allocated for coal mining for a privately owned thermal power plant. Singrauli is slated as the energy capital of India and claims to have 10 per cent of the total installed capacity of thermal power plants in India.
