Deep Sea Trawlers
Various deep sea trawlers fishing inside the NAFO area. Includes shots of fishing boat Santa Cristina, from Portugal, bottom trawling for Deep Sea Red Fish (Sabastes Marinus) at depths of 650 meters in the North Atlantic Ocean. The Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO) has been in existence since 1979 to manage and conserve the fishery resources of the Northwest Atlantic. Despite its adoption of a wide range of conservation and management measures and a well developed institutional structure, NAFO has been unable to achieve its mandate and as of 2005, ten stocks under NAFO?s competence are currently under moratoria. Together with the Deep Sea Conservation Coalition Greenpeace calls for a UN moratorium on high seas bottom trawling to allow scientists the time to identify and assess deep-sea biodiversity and to institute the protection required before it is too late.
