Bald Eagle in North Carolina
A bald eagle flies over the Dan River following a coal ash spill. Duke Energy said that 50,000 to 82,000 tons of coal ash and up to 27 million gallons of water were released from a pond at its retired power plant in Eden and continued to flow. Duke said a 48-inch stormwater pipe beneath the unlined ash pond broke Feb. 2, 2014, and drained into the river. Impacts on wildlife along the river are not yet known.
