Duke Energy Coal Ash Spill in Virginia
Discolored water is visible on the Dan River near the water treatment plant in Danville, Virginia. Duke Energy said that 50,000 to 82,000 tons of coal ash and up to 27 million gallons of water were released from a coal ash retention pond into the river six miles (9.6 kms) upriver from the Danville water system intake. A stormwater drain under the retention pond at the Dan River Steam Station, retired in 2012, continues to leak.
