Duke Energy Coal Ash Spill in North Carolina
Matt Wasson, director of programs at the environmental group Appalachian Voices, stands next to two bottles of sediment collected from the Dan River in Eden. The bottle on the left shows sediment from downstream and the one on the right is from upstream. Duke Energy said that 50,000 to 82,000 tons of coal ash and up to 27 million gallons of water were released from a 27-acre unlined pond into the Dan River, and the waste continues to flow. Duke said a 48-inch stormwater pipe beneath the unlined ash pond broke Feb. 2 releasing the waste into the river six miles, 9.6 kms, upriver from the water intake for Danville, Virginia, a city of 43,000.
