The canal dug by PT LUM has drained the peatland in Sungai Tohor, Kepulauan Meranti District, Sumatra. The canal is now used to transport sago logs.
Sago, a starch extracted from the spongy centre of various tropical palm stems, is a major income source for the village of Sungai Tohor.
