The Bowen Basin contains the largest coal reserves in Australia, an area of over 60,000 square kilometres in Central Queensland and there are proposals for extensive new mining activities — either extensions of existing mines or new mines entirely. For mercury, nine of the top ten highest mercury-polluting coal mines are in Queensland’s Bowen Basin.
