Local Business Woman on Jetty on Tarawa Island
Riteta Savins, is establishing a business producing tuna jerky for export that would provide income for several local families. She says it is increasingly difficult to find yellowfin tuna to produce tuna jerky and that the local fishermen have had reduced yellowfin catches since the arrival of foreign fishing vessels in Kiribati waters. The nation is considered one of the least developed and poorest countries in the world with people whose livelihoods depend on the fish.
Greenpeace are in Tarawa to document the challenges the people of Kiribati are facing towards their livelihood and survival, from climate change and overfishing.
