Nuclear Free Seas Protest against USS Conyngham
By diving from inflatable dinghies and creating a human blockade in the water, Greenpeace activists delayed the entry of the 4,500 tonne nuclear-capable USS Conyngham into the Danish port of Aalborg. For eight hours the activists swam in front of the destroyer and hung on its anchor lines while Conyngham's crew blasted them with high powered water hoses. The captain of the Conyngham had refused to declare whether or not his ship was carrying nuclear weapons, a requirement under Danish law. Twenty-five people were arrested and charged with disturbing shipping traffic and breaking harbour regulations.
