Toxic Sludge Damage in Hungary
Stained landscape near Kolontár, where the toxic sludge flood destroyed the vegetation. The evacuated part of Kolontár is now open for citizens to move back to their houses, but the cleaning process is still not finished. The toxic sludge flood occurred on the 4th October and it was caused by the rupture of a red sludge reservoir at an alumina plant.

Greenpeace activists visit the town of Kolontar ten days after it was hit by the toxic sludge flood caused by the rupture of a red sludge reservoir at an alumina plant. Parts of the town were evacuated and the inhabitants are now returning to their damaged homes, still red from the toxic sludge.
