Gavin Newman on MY Esperanza
Gavin Newman works on his 'ROV' (remote operated vehicle) on the deck of the MY Esperanza. He will use this complex machine he has built himself, to film life on the Arctic Ocean floor. The device can send its images back to a monitor on the surface allowing its operators a glimpse of the process in real time. Greenpeace will use the footage obtained in its campaign to protect the Arctic from the impacts of fishing and damage from trawlers. Greenpeace is calling for the area of the Arctic Ocean historically protected year round by sea ice to be closed to all industrial activity, including destructive fishing.
