ROV Deployment in the Arctic Ocean
Gavin Newman, who built an ROV (remote operated vehicle) specifically for filming the sea bed, tests his camera in Arctic waters, assisted by crew members from the MY Esperanza. The device can send its images back to a monitor on the surface allowing its operators a glimpse of the process in real time. Greenpeace will use the footage obtained in its campaign to protect the Arctic from the impacts of fishing and damage from trawlers. Greenpeace is calling for the area of the Arctic Ocean historically protected year round by sea ice to be closed to all industrial activity, including destructive fishing.
