Greenpeace expedition to Arctic Svalbard
Two researchers, one (on the left) a sea ice scientist from the University of Cambridge and the other, an architect from UCL in London use a revolutionary scanning technique to render three dimensional images of a pressure ridge in the Arctic sea ice. They have been brought to 80 degrees north by the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise. The scans will be used to make advanced calculations and models of sea ice formation and deformation. Scientists hope to make a clearer picture of the way that sea ice forms, breaks and reforms itself from the pieces.
