Deep Sea Oil Action at Taranaki Port
Greenpeace activist James Bellamy (left) speaks with Port Taranaki Harbour master John Ireland. Mr Ireland denied Greenpeace access to the boat ramp at Port Taranaki. Greenpeace protests at the arrival of the Polarcus Alima survey vessel at Port Taranaki. It is due to leave shortly to start exploring for deep sea oil off Raglan on behalf of the US oil giant Anadarko. Greenpeace New Zealand is campaigning against the Government's sell-off of deep water drilling rights in New Zealand. There are plans to drill in water up to twice as deep as the Deepwater Horizon was operating in when it exploded and sank in 2010, spilling millions of barrels of oil. The setting up of extreme new frontiers in the global search for the last remaining reserves of oil, will only make the climate crisis worse.
