Indian Fishermen Action in Orissa
Indian fishermen act to protect their livelihood. Highlighting the need for conservation and livelihood strategies to work together, local fishermen along with Greenpeace activists held a large banner reading ‘protect ecosystems, right to fish’ at Chilika Lake, Asia's largest brackish water lagoon. This activity was preceded by a comprehensive study by Greenpeace India and United Artists’ Association in 15 villages around the Gahirmatha marine sanctuary to document the attitudes and perceptions of fisher-folk towards multiple income generation options and marine conservation and management measures.
