Chembu, a mostly unelectrified panchayat in Kodagu district, Karnataka, is home to about 5000 people. Forty per cent of the population comprises of Dalits (a person of lower caste) or tribal people, and around twenty per cent are landless labourers. After applying for electricity continuously for the last 12 years, with no success, residents of Chembu with land and access to flowing water have begun to install their own private pico-hydro systems to bring electricity. Thirty five I kW systems have been installed in the panchayat by Nisarga Environment Technologies, a company that delivers renewable energy systems and efficient cooking stoves to remote rural areas. Greenpeace India documents their zeal and effort.
