Oiled Beach in Louisiana
Oil from the Deepwater Horizon wellhead washes up on the beach of Elmer's Island, a wildlife refuge, owned and maintained by the state of Louisiana. The BP leased Deepwater Horizon oil platform exploded April 20 and sank after burning, leaking an estimate of more than 210,000 gallons of crude oil per day from the broken pipeline to the sea.
