Oiled Beach on Grand Isle
Operations are carried out to build a barrier west of Grand Isle to protect Elmer's Island delicate marshlands from the oil spill originated by the Deepwater Horizon wellhead. A BP leased oil platform exploded on April 20 and sank after burning, leaking an estimate of more than 210,000 gallons of crude oil per day from the broken pipeline into the sea.
