Brown Pelican in Rescue Center
The International Bird Rescue Research Center has set up a facility in Fort Jackson to clean birds affected by oil leaking from the Deepwater Horizon wellhead. A Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) enjoys a refreshing shower while recovering in the facility in Fort Jackson. The BP leased oil platform exploded April 20 and sank after burning, leaking an estimate of more than 200,000 gallons of crude oil per day from the broken pipeline into the sea.
