Ecological Farmer in Cambodia
Sovanry Nhem, an ecological farmer from Takeo province, Cambodia adopts a System of Rice Intensification (SRI). She won first prize for the best SRI farmer in Cambodia. System of Rice Intensification involves using manure from livestock and directly adding it as a natural fertiliser to her ecological rice. It has proved to greatly increase her yield.
"I decided to do farming in an ecological way because I think of my families health and also when I use ecological produce, the surplus can go to the market. The soil in my farm is soft and rich in biodiversity and my soil will be fertile for a very long time. It also provides positive impact; the soil structure is good so I can grow other vegetable crops after the rice harvest. I can earn more income from this crop too. So to do ecological farming, the animals provide fertiliser and from the animal we can also sell the livestock - this is integrated farming. Water is an important element so we need to keep animals and we need a pond to irrigate the land".
