Firefighters in the Radioactive Contaminated Bryansk Region
A Greenpeace member wearing protective clothing holds a geiger counter.
Every spring fires start in the forests and fields of the Bryansk region that are still heavily contaminated with radiation after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Lack of government control and irresponsible behaviour of locals that burn dry grass lead to dangerous air pollution. Thirty years after the disaster, thousands of people still are exposed to radiation.
Greenpeace firefighters work hard to stop the spreading of these fires. The Ministry of Emergency teamed with Greenpeace to tackle the problem.
