Protest at Opening Party for New Coal Power Station in the Netherlands
Greenpeace activists offer a glass of black champagne to all guests of the opening party of the new E.On / Uniper coal power plant at the Maasvlakte near Rotterdam. They also hand out the COP 21 climate agreement. Next to the main entrance road, a large photo of a family standing in destroyed and dehydrated soil is displayed. The text in the photo reads: “Opening party! The newest coal fired power plant, Uniper, party like there is no tomorrow.”
The Mayor of Rotterdam, Aboutaleb will attend this event. Tomorrow State of Secretary Mr. Dijksma will officially sign the agreement on behalf of the Netherlands in New York.
Greenpeace states: “it is totally inappropriate to take into production a big new coal plant just one day before the official implementation of the new global climate agreement, and even more celebrate this with a party”.
Last year in Paris 196 government leaders agreed to limit global warming underneath two degrees. To achieve that target the CO2 emission must be brought down in such proportions that closure of all coal plants is inevitable.
