'Ocean Destroyer' Fender Action Preparation
Greenpeace activists paint a fender, found on Elephant Island with the words "Ocean Destroyer" ahead of an action in the waters around the South Orkney Islands, Antarctica.
The fender was discovered by scientists, washed up on Elephant Island, home of an important Antarctic penguin colony. Fenders are used by refrigerated cargo vessels (reefers) to stop them from colliding with fishing boats while they transfer cargo.
The Greenpeace ship Esperanza is on the final leg of the 'Protect The Oceans' voyage from the Arctic to the Antarctic. The almost year-long voyage is one of Greenpeace’s biggest ever expeditions and highlights the many threats facing the oceans while campaigning for a Global Ocean Treaty covering all seas outside of national waters.
