Investigation of a Methane Leak in the North Sea
The Esperanza floats in the UK waters of the North Sea during a ROV (ROUV, Remotely operated underwater vehicle) mission to a methane leak. The gas stems from a large leak on the Seabed. Activists on board the Greenpeace ship Esperanza documented two large methane leaks located in the British exclusive economic zone (at positions 57°55.30'N, 001°37.87'E and 57°54.81'N, 001°38.72'E) in the North Sea. Caused by a major blow-out incident during a gas drilling operation 30 years ago, the leak is still emitting the highly potent greenhouse gas methane.
