Karipuna Indigenous Land in Rondônia
Leaders of the Karipuna people have often denounced to state agencies in Brazil, and also internationally, the invasion and destruction of their territory, caused by land grabbers and loggers. Over 11,000 hectares of the Amazon forest have already been destroyed in the Karipuna Indigenous Land. Even the sale of lots has been carried out by the invaders. Located in the municipalities of Nova Mamoré and Porto Velho, in Rondônia state, the Brazilian government recognized it as an Indigenous Land in 1988. The Karipuna are an Indigenous People of recent contact with surrounding society, and were almost extinct in the 1970s. Currently, the Karipuna population totals 58 people.
