Penguin Colony in Antarctica
Penguin colony on Elephant Island in Antarctica.
Penguins stay at their colonies for months during summer, which means the colonies get covered in guano, or penguin poo. The red colour comes from krill, their main source of food. Nesting with other penguins gives them protection from predators like skuas. Generations of penguins come back to the same place to nest, meaning guano builds up over decades in the colonies. That makes them even better nesting places, higher from the ground.
Greenpeace is in the Antarctic to investigate the impacts of the climate crisis as part of the Protect the Oceans Expedition, a year long pole to pole ship tour, campaigning for the establishment of ocean sanctuaries to safeguard this frozen region and its penguins, seals and whales, and to help address the climate emergency.
