Red-breasted Nuthatch in Canadian Boreal Forest
Red breasted nuthatch (Sitta canadensis).
These birds collect resin and pitch from trees that they smear around the entrance to their nests to keep other creatures out. They begin their migration south from the boreal forest as early as July, much earlier than most migratory birds. They nimbly climb up, down and sideways along trees, without any seeming consideration of which direction is up.
