Norilsk is the world’s northernmost city with 150,000 inhabitants and is the second largest city (after Murmansk) inside the Arctic Circle.
Norilsk with Yakutsk and Vorkuta are the only large cities in the continuous permafrost zone.
It's also the most polluted city in Russia.
Nickel ore is smelted on site at Norilsk. The smelting is directly responsible for severe pollution, generally acid rain and smog.
