Activists Protest against Shell in Cologne
Greenpeace activists are demonstrating in front of the Cologne Cathedral against the Shell Rhineland refinery. The Activists carry banners that Read "SHELL VERGIFTET UNSERE UMWELT!" (SHELL POISONS OUR ENVIRONMENT) and "FOSSILE GEHÖREN INS MUSEUM" (FOSSILS BELONG IN MUSEUMS). Greenpeace demonstrates simultaneously in the North Sea with the Greenpeace ship Esperanza in the Brent oil field. In April, a leak at the refinery contaminated the soil and groundwater with hundreds of thousands of liters of oil. In addition, the company plans to leave parts of four old oil platforms with 11,000 tons of oil to rot in the North Sea.
