National Assembly in South Korea
Greenpeace East Asia Seoul gave a performance that staged the hypothetical situation in which Seoul’s major buildings were melting down due to extreme heat waves, in front of Marina Convention Centre in Yeoui-do in the morning on August 20th. Greenpeace displayed large-scale models of Seoul’s major buildings and produced a scene in which some of them were melted down. The objective was to remind the government that the unprecedented precipitation and flood damage, which have been continuing for 54 days this summer, and following heatwaves are signal of a climate crisis disaster, and to demand that the government respond proactively to the climate crisis.
Greenpeace urged the state to address the severity of the current situation and declare a climate emergency immediately the following demands made to the government and the National Assembly to 1) prioritize climate-positive action as a national agenda by declaring a climate emergency and focusing society’s capacities to this end, 2) reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 50% by 2030 and to carbon neutral by 2050 3) thoroughly predict the socioeconomic damages that will be caused by climate disasters and swiftly provide an emergency system for climate crisis disaster relief.
