Heinz Smital in Namie, Fukushima Prefecture
Heinz Smital, radiation specialist from Greenpeace Germany in Obori, Namie exclusion zone, Fukushima prefecture. Thousands of decontamination workers have been deployed in Fukushima since 2011. Radiation levels in this area are many tens to hundreds of times above the pre 2011 accident level. Workers are at risk of exposure equivalent to tens to hundreds of chest X rays per year. United Nations Special Rapporteurs on human rights have warned the Japanese government of radiation risks to workers, as well as the wider exploitation of workers, including recruitment of homeless people.
