Coal Spill at Holcim Cement Plant in La Union
Workers clean up the shores of Quirino, Bacnotan in La Union, after tons of coal spilled from the nearby Holcim cement factory. According to Holcim, heavy rains from tropical depression Henry on July 13 created a gap in their benched wall, pushing coal from their stockpile and into the shoreline. Nearby residents are not aware of the use of coal in the cement facility. Greenpeace is currently working with concerned citizens whose lives and survival are threatened by a proposed coal-fired power plant in Luna, La Union. Following President Duterte's recent SONA, coal-affected communities are seeking stronger statements against fossil fuels, similar to those directed at the mining industry, but hopefully with more distinct executive orders and other measures that lay out clear directions for a shift to renewables and other reforms.
