Adalgisa Martorelli, aged 55, lives in the small village of Cadelbosco in Italy (Emilia-Romagna Region), very close to two large pig factory farms, Azienda Agricola Fontanelle SNC di Ferrari e C. and Allevamento Tenuta Vincenzo s.r.l.. Adalgisa suffers from a respiratory illness that worsens in the presence of strong smell. In the past, she has been repeatedly forced to leave her home during manure spreading. She has undergone several hospitalizations and sometimes she has to use an oxygen mask at home. Ten years ago, Adalgisa created a small local committee together with other inhabitants of the village. Due to the work done by the committee, Azienda Agricola Fontanelle SNC di Ferrari e C. was forced by local authorities to suspend the spreading of the manure in neighbouring fields and reduced the number of pigs (from 12,500 to 3,899). In March 2019 the livestock company Le Fontanelle, owner of the farm, asked the local committee for a compensation for damages of 1,8 million euros due to the limitations imposed by the authorities. As of June 2019, the dispute is ongoing.
The other livestock farm - owned by Azienda Agricola Tenuta Vincenzo Srl - has been recently granted the expansion from 2,000 to 7,000 heads of pigs. The local committee is opposing this enlargement. Adalgisa said to Greenpeace Italy: “I’m terrified about the new request for enlargement: if this will be really done, I will probably not be able to live here any longer. I will have to decide to leave my home.”
