Woman Living near Factory Farms in Tingerup, Denmark
Pensioned school teacher Karin Pouret-Frydendahl, aged 69, and her husband, gymnasium teacher Michel, aged 70, have lived in their house in the village of Tingerup since 1975. Their home is situated right between the three factory farms Bolettesminde, Edelgundegaard and Vandvaerksgaarden, with only a few hundred meters distance to each farm. When they moved in, the number of farms and animals in the area was much smaller. Now their quality of life is severely impacted by the smell from the farms, both of them reported to Greenpeace Nordic in Denmark. All windows have three layers of glass to keep the smell and noise out. They almost never open their windows, and they never dry clothes outside.
The photo shows Karin with her silver wedding dress. She remembers her silver wedding anniversary with sadness. All the guests were in the garden, when the wind suddenly changed and it started smelling very badly. Karin says: “For me the day was completely ruined. I almost cried and I felt ashamed because of the rotten smell. Our social life is ruined, because we cannot have guests outside. I often feel nauseous and uncomfortable.”
