Couple Living near Vandvaerksgaarden Factory Farm, Denmark
Bente and Soeren take a walk in the fields around their rural property in the countryside. In the background the factory farm is visible. For more than 20 years former high school teacher Bente Joergensen and her husband, chemical engineer Soeren Hansen, have lived in an old rural house only 100 meters from the industrial pig farm Vandvaerksgaarden in the small village of Tingerup - around 60 kilometers west of Copenhagen.
Bente says she gets sick when the smell is strong, with headaches and red and swollen eyes. Bente reported to Greenpeace Nordic in Denmark that she has respiratory problems and can hardly breathe, when the manure is spread or when the air is ventilated in the pig stables.
The couple is afraid they may be exposed to harmful substances through manure and air, which they fear may have long-term effects. They say that most of the locals living close to the farm get sick from the smell.
