Organic Farmer Affected by Nearby Dairy Factory Farm in Caparroso, Spain
Ricardo Antón, aged 56, runs an organic horticulture farm in Caparroso, the village next to the Valle de Odieta factory farm. Ricardo, also known as “Ritxi” caters to small clients, including two school cantines. He commits to produce in a sustainable model and prefers to remain as a small enterprise level to guarantee quality over quantity. During the visit by Greenpeace Spain, Ritxi showed the different land squares he works on and the type of products he harvests.
Ritxi said to Greenpeace Spain: “The beginning of my horticulture farm was hard, really hard. We did not sell anything. There were no sales channels at that time. Currently, we are serving two school canteens. We also collaborate with other organic farmers, who do direct sales, and with some small stores.”

Dairy Factory Farm in Spain
The dairy factory farm operating under the name “Valle de Odieta, S.C.L./Corraliza el Tomillar, S.Coop. and Hibridación Termosolar Navarra, S.L.” is located in the province of Navarre, Spain. It is the biggest dairy farm in the whole rural area of Navarre and one of the biggest in Spain. In the last 50 years there was a huge transformation in livestock production in Spain, from a traditional and extensive production to a very intensive and industrial production. This has a huge environmental impact. The intensive livestock farming has changed the shape of the landscape and the flora in the nearby fields. Green algae is visible on the water effluents from the farm, probably due to the high nutrient content on the manure being disposed. This nutrient pollution is likely to reach the Aragón River.
