Hambach Forest (German: Hambacher Forst, Buergewald) is a forest rich in biodiversity and home to 142 species regarded as important for conservation.
Only ten percent of Hambach Forest still remains and these sections are under threat of being cut down to allow the expansion of the lignite-extracting Hambach surface mine, run by RWE.

Der Hambacher Forst oder Buergewald war ein vor dem Tagebau urspruenglich noch 4.100 Hektar grosses Waldgebiet, das weitgehend dem Braunkohletagebau Hambach weichen musste. Ein weiterer Abbau ist bereits genehmigt. Der Hambacher Forst ist ein Wald mit hoher oekologischer Wertigkeit, soll aber fuer den sich weiter ausbreitenden Braunkohletagebau Hambach, betrieben von RWE, gerodet werden.
