Village Novikbozh, Komi Republic, Russia
Vitaly Filipov, village Novikbozh resident: “At night there is so much noise all the winter, explosions, drillings, pumps operating. One, two or three birds left here, probably."
Lukoil began a large-scale seismic survey near the Pechora River. Forests are cut down in search of new oil deposits. Streams and swamps get polluted. Lukoil is known for a huge number of oil spill accidents. In 2017, two oil wells burned for a month in the Alabushin oil field. Now a big area near Komi villages on the opposite bank of Pechora river is planned for new oil exploration. Seismic surveys that are conducted there now have a lot of violations.
Locals say that fish and game have already disappeared in the area. People are protesting against seismic works in their homeland. They think it poses a threat to their health and lives.
