Illegal timber has a devastating impact on forests and the lives of people who depend on them.
Instead of serving as a reliable source for attesting the origin of timber, Brazilian forestry licensing and control system have been systematically defrauded, allowing the illegal product to be "washed" and mixed with legal production, infecting the whole market.
To draw attention to the problem, Greenpeace launches an interactive tool to encourage social control over deforestation. Through the "Crime in the Forest" website, any citizen will be able to analyze signs of fraud in forest management plans, through satellite data and images, and even alert Brazilian authorities.
